Science Experiments

In science class, we experimented with what happens when different liquids are mixed with water.

We also designed our own experiments to find out if toothpaste is a solid or a liquid. Thank you to my student photographers for the following pictures!
Does toothpaste pile up or take the shape of its container?

If you put an object on top of toothpaste, does the object stay on top or sink to the bottom?

What happens when we mix it with water?

Can we see particles that make the toothpaste?
These First Graders are really starting to think like scientists!

Our Collections

This week, the First Graders brought in their collections to kick off our unit on opinion writing. We had everything from keys to stuffed animals to football cards!

Each person chose a first place from his or her own collection. We learned to write about which one was the best (or 2nd best or 3rd best), to give reasons why, and to add details.

We also learned how to politely disagree with someone else's opinion by saying things like, "I can see why you think ___ is the best, but I think ___ is the best because..."

More Work with Liquids

We have been experimenting with liquids to find out how a liquid's shape changes with the shape of the container. We also found out that the liquid always moves to the bottom of the container, and the surface of the liquid stays level with the ground no matter which way you tip it!

Ordering Numbers

We've been working on putting 2-digit numbers in order from least to greatest (or greatest to least). We first compare the tens place. If the tens place is the same, we compare the ones place.
These numbers are in order from least to greatest

Exploring Liquids

In science, we have started exploring liquids. We have bottles filled with different liquids. We tried lots of things to see if different liquids move differently.
rolling down a ramp

shaking

spinning to make a tornado

tipping slowly
We have also been using lots of new vocabulary words to talk about liquids -- transparent, translucent, bubbly, foamy, and viscous.

Towers

Here's where we left off before Winter Break...

In science, we learned that certain solid objects have properties that make them useful for building towers. We planned our own towers, and then built them!
